Comic-Con 2005 Quick Draw Panel
Host: Mark Evanier
Artists: Sergio Aragones, Scott Shaw, Kyle Baker, Jeff Smith
The Comic-Con Quick Draw panel is most consistently entertaining event at Comic-Con. It is dominated by Sergio Aragones, whose blazingly fast drawings, humor, and occassional inability to understand English are highlighted throughout, but Shaw/Baker/Smith are fun as well. I'm inclined to remember the 2004 Quick Draw Competition as being more fun, but that may be a trick of memory.
The Quick Draw Panel is, well, quick, so this year's blog-based summary is a two-person effort. Notes were taken by parakkum and the photos were taken by yours truly.
WARNING: this entry is very, very long, with many, many photos.
(no Jeff Smith yet)
Sergio writes Hola

"I was going to ask them to draw themselves, but Sergio has already done this"
Sergio -- please draw what you see in the audience (scribbles with
eyes and flashes)

Scott -- himself waving, Hula skirt "Hula!"
Kyle Baker -- himself waving

New rule: no proctologist cartoons today
Game 1: Crossed Animals
Kyle -- giraffe and gopher
Scott -- cricket and platypus
"Platypus already looks like four animals combined"

Sergio -- bunny and three-toed sloth
"What's a three-toed sloth?"
ME -- "It takes him longer to understand than it does to draw."

Game 2: Show and Tell (do the drawing that illustrates the anecdote,
then tell us the anecdote)
"The most famous person I ever met"
Sergio -- Was in the Warner brothers office and Nixon was there.
Everyone was pushed away to make space for the president. Nixon went
into the office and started talking to him. "I can not get over it
that he sounds like an imitation of Rich Little." Ended up giving him
a sketch.

Kyle -- "I can't draw Mohammed Ali."
Scott -- "Some guy with the cheesiest perm I'd ever seen. I think the second San Diego Comic Con, this kind of human ball of energy came to the Con. Sergio was young and cocky, had a big chest and big chest hair. He was absolutley scary as hell. He was so fiercely happy that I admired him and I wanted to meet him, but I was scared of him. Now we're dear, dear friends, but he still scares me."

Game 3: New Jobs for the Hulk
Kyle -- Hulk as teacher
Scott -- Hulk as a jockey

Sergio -- Hulk as a nurse

Game 4: New Job for the Human Torch
Kyle -- Fireman
Scott -- Working at Sea World

Sergio -- Ballerina

Game 5:Secret Word -- show three words to everyone in the room except Tom. Cartoonists must draw things that will get Tom to say the word. No lettering allowed. Scott puts up three secret words.
CREEP -- got it close enough
Sergio -- "Are we doing the same word?"

WILL
ME: "Sergio's drawing the third word."
Pegged it

PRODUCE
ME: "By the way, we could be here a long time."
"Carrots, bananas, vitamin A...."
Pegged it pretty quickly.

ME: "Scott, will you draw Space Ghost for us please. I want someone to audition for the role of Space Ghost."
Do two bad people, then to the real voice (Gary Olds)

Game 6: Another secret word game with Gary Olds
ROTTEN
Pegged it from the rotten apple
Sergio "I didn't even draw"
ME "Sergio, you've got to be faster for this game"

PURPLE
"It looks like my friend Jonathon Winter's closet"
ME is trying to lead him through this
"Do you know by the way that in the Wizard of Oz books, L. Frank Baum never mentioned rainbows once."

PUDDING
Sergio "That's impossible."
"He's just spilled some butterscotch pudding"

Game 7: Annual Scott Shaw drawing Hanna Barbara characters challenge
How long it'll take him to draw ten characters.
Snagglepus, Judy Jetson, [Okie?] Wolf, Betty Rubble, Pixie and Dixie
(five and six), The Ranger (Scott "The Ranger looked different in
every Yogi Bear cartoon"), Magilla Gorilla, Johnny Quest ("It's little
Archie, but it's close enough" "Wait, he has a turtleneck on, does
that help?"), Yogi Bear
4:47 total

Game 8: Kyle -- in one minute, how many plastic man heads can you draw?
Sergio: "Ask me how many times I can draw the invisible man."
Scott: "Don't do drugs, kids."

Kyle steps down, Jeff Smith steps in (Kyle draws Jeff, Jeff draws Kyle)

Game 9: Peet Peeves
Cell Phones
Scott: "I was bowling, and saw a woman bowling while she was talking on the phone. Can you imagine what that sounded like on the other end of the line."

Jeff: "I don't have a story, I'm just drawing.

DMV

Game 10: Show and tell, same question, different answer
Really, really annoying comic fan coming up to you asking for a drawing
Jeff: "So we draw an annoying comic fan, coming up to Sergio..."
ME: "Must have thousand of examples by now. Must have thousands from today."
Sergio:

ME: "Did this actually happen to you?"
Sergio: "No, it happened like this." (next drawing)

Scott: "Every once in a while, I get one of these furry fans...they come up and try to hire me to draw sex scenes with Captain Carrot characters."

Game 11: An oddball comic for show-and-tell
"A comic from the 60s that depicts a robot having sex with a ghost through a wall, and the ghost really likes it"

ME: Let's have another scene of this robot and this ghost together in some capacity.

About Oddball comics
Sergio: "Or they could go by your booth and get the cards."
Scott: "That's true. They could also go to my house and steal the comics. I'm not there right now."
Game 11: Sergio -- draw Alfred E. Neumann, then Sergio Scenario
Sergio: "I knew it. That's why I drew it so small."

Added, in order:
King Kong

Invasion of aliens from outer space
Gangsters
(Sergio: "See, I'm trying to avoid using space...")
(Sergio: "No stereotypes.")

A pirate ship is attacking
A samurai warrior is attacking, also
Let's make it two samurai warriors
On second thought, three samurai warriors (Sergio draws shadows on the hill)
(Sergio: "One...two...three...four...six...a castle, too....and a geisha.")

And a herd of elephants
(Sergio: "Flying...")

And, uh...Darth Vader
(Sergio: "He looks like Porky pig.")

Clowns

A mummy
And...a...mummy
And a ancient Egyptian burial person swathed in bandages
Some dancing girls

Game 12: Imagine a full-figure drawing of the character on the page,
but draw just the head, leaving room for the body
Then swap
Jeff to Scott, Scott to Sergio, Sergio to Jeff
Continue the same drawing to the waist
Swap again
Sergio to Jeff, Scott to Sergio, Jeff to Scott

Game 13: Show and tell. The oddest thing I've seen at this convention.
ME: "The oddest thing I've seen at this convention is Sergio not knowing what to draw"
Sergio: "There's so much of it..."

Game 14: FInd a new job for Sergio
Jeff -- Sergio as makeup artist

Scott -- Sergio as a soldier

Sergio -- Sergio as the CEO of a major conglomerate

Game 15: Find three more jobs for Sergio
Jeff -- Forest ranger
Scott --
Sergio: "Mark has been taking too long. Give me Mark as a different
comic book character."
Batman, Bone, Wonder Woman

Mark: "And by the way, next year you can be here playing quickdraw with three new people."
Scott: "Yeah, but Sergio's drawing from memory."
