The San Francisco Examiner says that an estimated 680,000 people attended the first five stages of the Tour, with the biggest benefits going to small towns like Martinez. This puts the Tour of California on pace to set the record for the highest attendance of any sporting event in California.
Dave Aiello points out that ESPN2 isn't to blame for the Tour coverage: the Tour purchases the time slot from ESPN2 and produces it's own programming. The fight's still ongoing in the VeloNews mailbag (Friday's/Wednesday's). I'm actually much happier with the more recent stage coverage on TV, and there are even Stage 2 and Stage 4 recaps on Google Video (with odd audio tracks).
