Kilkenny (soon)

My new work machine is almost ready: 3.2Ghz dual Xeon with 4GB of RAM. Our desktops get beer names and I was asked to submit a list of names:

  • Kilkenny
  • Arrogant Bastard
  • Dead Guy
  • Delirium Tremens
  • Fat Tire

Kilkenny wins, not for taste, but for its many possible meanings. I also considered Maudite ("cursed"), but I'll save that one for an injury-prone Mac.

I wish I got to use cool names...

All of my work machines have formula names.

Which 3.2Ghz Xeon did you get (bus/cache size)?

I think it's a 2MB L2 cache version and I don't know the bus. The computer is still getting some final IT work on it so I have yet to actually see it. I've already turned down the thermostat in my office in preparation.

I had to move my 4way 3Ghz out of my office allong with my 4way Itanium... It was just too hot in here (about 90+)... The only things I have left are my 2.8Ghz P4 and my 1.8Ghz laptop.

I'm going to be adding a dual xeon back to the mix, hopefull it won't go back up to 90+ degrees.

Should be a fast machine... Are you going to run 64bit windows or 32bit? If you run 32bit run with /pae and /3GB in your bootini. It will take better advantage of your full memory config. If you ever upgrade then you really need /pae as if you are more then 4GB windows can't even see the memory without pae.

thanks for the recommendation. I have no idea whether I'm getting Win 64 or 32, but I guess I'll find out soon enough.
